Underbelly three to start shooting in Sydney

Underbelly season three, focussing on the Kings Cross underworld of the 1990s, has commenced shooting in Sydney.

The series titled Underbelly: The Golden Mile will be based on events that took place between the previous two seasons of the gangland crime drama and will air next year.

“The Golden Mile is set in King Cross in 1989, where bent cops, straight cops, cool criminals and colourful characters all converged to make their mark,” Channel Nine said in a statement.

“But by 1995 the Wood Royal Commission had put the black empire under threat of collapse as strong and honest police fought to take back control of the most infamous strip in Australia.”

Characters that will features in the drama include former prostitute, stripper and police woman Kim Hollingsworth, played by Emma Booth and Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim portrayed by Firass Dirani and detective Chook Fowler, played by Damian Garvey.

Police officers Joe Dooley and Eddie Gould would be played by Wil Travel and Diarmid Heidenreich, known for his role as Dougie the pizza boy in commercials from the 1990s.

Peter O’Brien, who played George Freeman in Underbelly II, will continue his role in the third series.

Paul Tassone, Daniel Roberts and Dieter Brummer will also reprise their roles from the last series, which was based on events from the late 1970s until the early 80s.

Executive director Des Monaghan said working on the top rating show was an “exciting and stimulating challenge”, and the third instalment was no exception.

“Sydney’s Kings Cross in the 90s provided an appropriately colourful stage for an amazing gallery of characters and their often incredible exploits,” he said.
