The 15 year old suffered fatal head injuries during a fight at Mullumbimby High School on the state’s north coast on Friday.

The boy was taken to the Gold Coast Hospital in a critical condition and put on life support, but died the following morning.

Spokesman for the Opposition, Adrian Piccoli, said the boy’s death is a tragedy.

“The most important thing that an education must provide to students is safety,” he said.

“That’s got to be the ultimate priority and unfortunately following this incident the Government must now really take a serious look at it.”

New South Wales Police are investigating what happened during the school’s morning recess and are interviewing staff and students who may have witnessed the brawl.

Detectives are looking into whether the boy was unwell before the fight and currently awaiting the results of a post mortem examination
