Schapelle Corby’s hopes of returning home to Australia depend on whether a prison transfer agreement with Indonesia takes place, according to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

A recent psychiatrists report has warned that the 32 year old convicted drug trafficker probably wouldn’t survive her 20 year sentence if she remains in Kerobokan Prison on the island of Bali.

A renewed bid to bring Corby back to Australia has been supported by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, who has been sent a copy of the 20 page report from the psychiatrist.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has said that Corby was receiving full support from the Australian consul-general that was possible.

“The practical problem is that no prisoner transfer agreement exists between Australia and Indonesia and I’m advised none exists between Indonesia and any other country,” he said.

“Negotiations are under way.”

He remained cautious by saying that questions still remained as to whether Corby would satisfy Indonesian conditions allowing a transfer.

“On the practicalities of the application of such an agreement for Ms Corby, we’ve got to get all that right first in terms of support within the prison where she is,” he said.

“I have every confidence that our consul-general is doing everything physically possible to support her and other prisoners in what is obviously a very, very difficult time.

“We will provide whatever level of support we can … (as we will) around the world where every day our officials are engaged in similar visits to prisoners.”

Corby was arrested at Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai airport in 2004 in possession of 4.1 kilograms of marijuana in her boogie board bag and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Her sentence was reduced by four months last month for good behaviour in prison, as part of Independence Day celebrations.
