Senior Liberal Frontbencher Tony Abbot was banned from Parliament for 24 hours yesterday after the Speaker of the house became annoyed by his wandering around in front of the Coalition frontbench.

Abbot was standing and talking to coalition colleagues as Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard used an answer during question time in order to attack the Opposition’s workplace relations policy.

Mr Abbot was first warned by Harry Jenkins after he remained out of his seat for a lengthy period of time.

Jenkins said that he would not have people deciding that they could just wander around the house as a gesture.

Ms Gillard launched into an attack on Mr Abbot when she resumed speaking, saying that: “I do understand that whenever the member for Warringah is near a microphone people become concerned about a word being used that isn’t suitable for daytime TV,”

Gillard was referring to comments Abbot made to a pack of journalists last week about Gillard, saying that she had been wearing a “s***-eating grin”.

Tony Abbot was named by Jenkins before the government moved a motion that he be suspended from the house, which resulted in the member for Warringah being banned for 24 hours.

Australians job seekers are dropping out of the workforce s the number of full time positions continues to decline.

30,800 full-time jobs disappeared from the economy last month whilst the unemployment rate remained steady at 5.8 percent according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics released yesterday.

The jobless rate was explained by a dip of 0.3 in the participation rate which meant that fewer people looking for jobs last month.

The fall in job figures and participations were described by Employment Minister Julia Gillard as disturbing.

She said that this meant that there were Australians who were looking for were who did want to enter the work force but were now discouraged from doing so.

Ms Gillard added that there were also Australians who were seeking fulltime jobs but were only able to obtain part-time work.

She also said that the jobless rate was slightly below expectations, but Australia continued to weather the economic storm compared to its overseas peers.

Following a spate of violent attacks in Melbourne, Indian student enrolments are expected to plummet by up to 50 percent next year, comprising of current students and potential students.

The shortfall is expected to cost the Victorian economy tens of millions of dollars.

It is feared that it could take years to rebuild Australia’s reputation in India, with students opting for the US or Britain which they perceive as safer destinations.

The international student market is Australia’s third-largest export industry behind coal and iron ore, and is worth $15.5 billion a year.

A spokesman for La Trobe University said Indian enrolments for 2010 were expected to half following a significant drop in inquiries and applications since the attacks in May and June.

”What’s aggravated the situation is the Indian media making it sound like racism rather than opportunistic crimes,” The Spokesman said.

”A lot of Indian parents are now willing to pay $10,000 or more extra to send their children to the UK or the US rather than Australia.

”Australia needs to rebuild its brand in India but … it’s going to take years.”

There are almost 1200 Indian students studying at Latrobe, but the drop in Indian students would be made up by a surge in Chinese student enrolments.

The Federal Government has launched a campaign to restore Australia’s reputation in India as Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard heads to India for a five-day visit. Victorian Premier John Brumby will travel to India next month ahead of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd who will visit later in the year.
