John Della Bosca’s secret lover has been revealed as comedy writer Kate Neill.

Ms Neill’s exposing of their affair prompted Mr Della Bosca to quit as New South Wale’s State Health Minister.

The revelations come as Labor ministers stand by Mr Della Bosca, saying his political career isn’t over following the affair.

His former mistress claims the health minister played her like a fool.

Ms Neill attempted to justify her relationship with the former health minister by saying that he led her to believe that his marriage was over and then she grew to love him, believing they had a future together.

Police Minister Tony Kelly has defended his friend and political ally, Mr Della Bosca, saying that it would be a loss if he doesn’t return to the front bench.

Meanwhile, speculation has arisen on the internet that Ms Neill once had a relationship with Paul Livingstone, known as ‘Flacco’ on an ABC variety show.

A Federal Government taskforce says that the cost of cigarettes should be raised to over $20 a packet, junk food advertising be phased out and soft drinks and cask wine should be hit with higher taxes.

Led by University of Melbourne’s Professor Rob Moodie, the taskforce says it plans to tackle obesity, smoking and alcohol abuse that could save the health care system billions of dollars and prevent more than 800,000 premature deaths.

The final report put together by the taskforce was handed to the Government two months ago and released yesterday by Health Minister Nicola Roxon, who is committed to acting on many of the ideas outlined in the report.

The industry has hit back saying that it was an attack on the poor and on freedom of choice, while the Australian Communications and Media Authority say there is little evidence about the benefits of banning food and beverage advertising.

Experts in the health field have also criticised the taskforce for giving in to industry pressure and recommending a voluntary, self regulated approach over the next for years.

A spokesman for British American Tobacco Australia said the price increase would put a further financial strain on poorer Australians.

The NSW State Government has issued a survey asking people how many sexual partners they’ve had in a new campaign to fight sexually transmitted disease.

The survey is designed to get people thinking about how many partners they’ve had and to promote STD testing, along with a $1.5 million advertising campaign.

The theme of the campaign, “sleeping with one is sleeping with many”, was a call for young people to use condoms, have regular STD tests and seek treatment if they contract a Sexuallty Transmissable Infection (STI).

The aim of the campaign is to arrest the increasing number of sexually transmitted infections.

Almost 17,000 people tested positive for Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV in NSW last year, but health authorities believe that the true figure could be much higher as many people with STI’s show no symptoms.

Statistics show that the number of infections in the last eight years has risen from 1695 in 2000 to 7194 in 2008.

Health Minister John Della Bosca strongly encouraged young people to have regular testing for STI’s.

“See your doctor for an STI check every time you change regular partners.”

The “Get Tested, Play Safe” campaign was overseen by an expert advisory committee which included young people.
