The Bomber’s captain was reported for rough conduct after he took out Hawthorn’s Brad Sewell at the MCG that left him with a fractured cheekbone and eye socket.

Lloyd will learn on Monday how the match review assesses his report.

Following the game,  Campbell Brown branded Lloyd a ‘sniper’ in a radio interview.

“Matty Lloyd – he has done that a fair few times to us and I think he is one of the biggest snipers in the game, so his time is coming,” Brown said.

“We’re not going to forget in a hurry what Matty Lloyd did – and I hope he plays on next year.”

The remarks infuriated Essendon who claim that the 270-game veteran’s character was attacked.

“We are very disappointed in the comments from the Hawthorn camp,” Essendon football manager Paul Hamilton said.

“One, we are not happy with the attack on the character and integrity of our captain; two, the veiled threats made again Matthew; three, the comments that are prejudicial to a potential tribunal hearing this week; and four, the appalling set of double standards on display by Campbell Brown.

“Matthew Lloyd has had such a long and wonderful career and a strong reputation as a ball player.”

Hawthorn’s loss means that they will not play in the final series.
