Imprisoned drug smuggler Schapelle Corby will spend her sixth Christmas behind bars in Kerobokan Jail in Bali, Indonesia, as her family claims she is not mentally fit.

Lawyers representing Corby are not working on a new campaign to seek clemency or having her sentence cut.

Corby’s sister, Mercedes, has claimed that Schapelle is in her own little world and far from reality.

She continued to say on the outside, Schapelle looks fine, but looking at her and talking to her, it is clear that her condition is far from fine. This may pose a problem as Indonesian authorities may view this as a sign that she is okay.

Corby has exhausted all avenues of appeal to Indonesian courts to have her 20-year sentence overturned; new lawyer Iskandar Nawing is preparing a new strategy to have her sentence slashed and conviction overturned.

He is working on a clemency bid to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, seeking clemency on humanitarian grounds, and that she is now in need of specialist psychiatric care.

Narwing this week said he was too busy to comment on the case, but it is thought he is working on a plea for clemency.

Unlike other clemency bids, there would be no acceptance of guilt, as Corby has long said she would never apologise or admit guilt.

It is not known when the application would be made, which needs to be considered directly by the Indonesian President, and would cite humanitarian issues along with legal criteria’s, including the fact that other people convicted for similar offences have been given more lenient sentences.

Corby was caught by customs officers in October 2004 at Denpasar Airport in Bali with 4.1 kilograms of marijuana in a boogie board bag.

Schapelle Corby is perfectly sane and not showing signs consistent with abnormal mental health, a Kerobokan prison doctor says.

In a report for New Idea, psychiatrist Associate Professor Jonathan Phillips claims that Corby was in such a fragile mind that she “could easily move forward to kill herself”.

The jail’s Dr Agus Hartawan disputes this, saying that Corby is not exhibiting any signs of mental illness.

”Judging from her daily routine, she’s fine,” Dr Hartwan told The Age.

”As of today, she’s doing OK, she’s socialising OK with the others. When she’s stressed or depressed she will act out, but other than that, she’s normal.”

Dr Hartawan also claims that Dr Phillips spoke with Corby for “no more than an hour”, and that he has not witnessed the report.

Corby’s family are using the report to push for Schapelle to be sent back to Australia.

In spite of the renewed clamour for Corby to spend the rest of her jail term in Australia, Indonesia has said that no negotiations were being made on the matter.

Schapelle’s sister, Mercedes Corby said earlier this week that the 20-page report was “terrifying” and that the family planned to send it to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and other political leaders in a bid to push the Australian Government to act.

“We have to get proper treatment for Schapelle, outside a jail environment and preferably in Australia, or she will die.

“That’s what the doctor says and, sadly, I know it’s true because Schapelle has already harmed herself twice.”

A top Australian psychiatrist has warned that convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby will not survive her 20-year prison sentence in Bali’s Kerobokan prison unless she is moved out.

Associated Professor Jonathan Phillips visited Corby this month saying that she was “hanging by a thread”.

”She is lost in her own bewildering world where fantasy, hallucinations and bizarre ideas dominate her mind,” he said.

He went on to say that Corby’s condition would continue to deteriorate unless she was transferred back to Australia and treated in a secure hospital, or failing that, undergoing treatment at a psychiatric facility in Bali.

Dr Phillips is confident that Corby’s condition is genuine.

”I have been a psychiatrist for many years, and I approach my work with proper clinical scepticism.

”She is not putting this on. She is in the deepest of pain and her personal world is coming apart.”

Corby’s family will send the doctor’s report to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and other political figures to push for her transfer.

Schapelle Corby was arrested at Bali’s Denpasar airport in 2004 with 4.1 kilograms of marijuana found in her bodyboard bag.
