Matthew Newton apologises for trashing hotel room

Underbelly star Matthew Newton is in trouble again after a hotel room he was staying in over the weekend was trashed.

Newton, son of TV icon Bert Newton, was staying at the Vibe Hotel in Sydney’s Rushcutters Bay last week when he attended a party for the GQ Man of the Year awards.

The hotel room had been booked under the name of his girlfriend, fellow actor Rachael Taylor; however she was not with him on the night.

He left the hotel on Friday and it is believed that staff of the hotel later discovered the room to be in a state of disarray and property had been damaged.

Emma Kearns, communications manager for Vibe Hotels in Sydney said yesterday that police were still looking into the matter.

She went on to say that respecting the privacy of their guest, they would continue to assist police with any inquiries.

NSW police also confirmed that they were investigating the alleged vandalism, with a police spokesman saying that they have received a report of damage in a hotel room at Rushcutters Bay, in which the occupants had since vacated.

A spokeswoman for the star yesterday confirmed that he had taken responsibility and apologised for the act of vandalism.

The representative said that it was his room and that he was not certain who caused the damage and has apologised to the hotel.

Taylor was not with Newton at the hotel, as she was in Mildura working on a new film called Summer Coda, but was seen with him at a Melbourne nightclub on Saturday night.

Trouble isn’t a new phenomenon for the Underbelly star, having been charged with assaulting his then girlfriend Brooke Satchwell in 2006 which he was later convicted of and given a 12-month good behaviour bond.
