Leading online price comparator for car hire firms around the world, Carrentals.co.uk, has launched a competition to find its favourite online video clip featuring something to do with cars. All clips submitted can be viewed for the duration of the competition on the Carrentals.co.uk. YouTube page.

Those who think they have something original and funny to offer should upload their clips, remembering to keep them under 90 seconds, to their own YouTube pages as well as the Carrentals.co.uk page.

The person judged to have produced the best clip by the competition’s deadline, on September 30 2010, will be rewarded for their cinematic efforts by being given a 16GB Apple iPad. Two runners up will receive £50 worth of John Lewis vouchers for second place and £25 worth of vouchers for third.

Managing Director of Carrentals.co.uk, Gareth Robinson, said: “We know what an important role video plays on the Internet these days, which is why we wanted to bring together a selection of the best car-related clips for people to watch all in one place. The videos can be on anything relating to cars, but have to make the Carrentals judges laugh and they must be legal, safe and comply with all terms and conditions for the entrant to be in with a chance of winning an iPad.”

The successful short video makers will be announced by Carrentals.co.uk on October 14. Budding filmmakers wishing to have a go at winning an iPod should visit the Carrentals.co.uk website to see a run down of the competition rules.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has been asked by the Dutch Government to review its claim that fifty-five percent of the Netherlands is below sea level. The IPCC has said that what it meant to say was that fifty-five percent of the country was at risk from flooding. The Dutch Government said that according to their figures only twenty-six percent of the Netherlands is actually below sea level.

The mistake follows the embarrassing revelation that the IPCC’s claim that the glaciers of the Himalayas would disappear completely by the year 2035 was based on a magazine interview with a little known scientist who had absolutely no research to back up his claim.

Further fuel has been given to climate change skeptics by leading scientists who have admitted that much of the data being collected from weather stations around the world may be contaminated. It is thought that any recorded increase in temperature may be due to local conditions such as changing land use and industrialisation rather than a global phenomenon.

Prominent climate change scientist Professor Phil Jones has found himself in the middle of what has been dubbed Climategate because he says that as far as his analysis of the data is concerned there has been no significant change in the temperature of our planet since 1995. Professor Jones had to step down from his position as the director of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit after emails were leaked which showed that he and his team had reworked data to make the climate change theory more convincing.

The success of the film Avatar has prompted about 12,000 Aussies to learn the film’s native language, according to reports.

US-based designer of the website www.learnnavi.org, Sebastian Wolff, said that he has vastly underestimated the interest in the 1000 or so listed words.

Having originally expected less than a few hundred visitors, the site is now receiving over 15,000 hits per day, with 70 per cent of them new.

An example of the phrase ‘are you going to the cricket?’ translates to “ma tsmukan, nga kivadia ne agrikragrikagrit?” in Na’vi language.

The site is one of the many crazy spin-off stories spurred on by the movie, after China renamed a mountain after the movie.

Avatar has exceed the global box office record set by the film Titanic, according to estimates by sources at 20th Century Fox, the studio behind the film.

A school teacher who alleges a colleague assaulted her has launched a legal battle against the prestigious school where they worked.

According to documents filed in Brisbane’s Supreme Court, Christine Gillions suffered bruising to her arm, as well as depression and anxiety after Justine Bomm attacked her at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School on the 25th of January in 2008.

The women, both employed as teachers at the school at the time, were working in the learning support unit discussing operations of the school when Ms Bomm allegedly grabbed her co-worker by the arm and pushed her backwards.

Ms Gillions says the assault affected her so much that she would never be able to return to work as a teacher.

She is claiming $883,657 in damages from the Board of Trustees at the school, alleging that it was negligent by not protecting her from an attack by another staff member.

A date for hearing has not been fixed.

Jetstar passengers in Thailand to get full refund

Qantas low-cost subsidiary Jetstar has reimbursed passengers on board a Sydney-bound flight the cost of accommodation and flights after they were stranded in Phuket due to technical issues.

JQ28 from Phuket to Sydney was scheduled to depart at 9pm local time on Monday, however the flight was cancelled, leaving 290 passengers to spend Australia day far from home.

After spending an extra, unscheduled night on the Thai resort island, passengers returned to the airport yesterday and boarded the flight, only to be informed that, for a second time, the flight would not proceed.

It is now expected to leave Phuket tonight and arrive in Sydney tomorrow morning.

Jetstar said in a statement that two separate delays to the aircraft were caused by unrelated technical issues, and all passengers were provided with two nights’ accommodation, with the airline covering expenses for meals and airport transfers.

The airline has said that it refunded the full return airfare and issued a $600 Jetstar travel voucher as compensation for the disruption.

Passenger Natalie Soltysewski said tempers flared as passengers were left waiting for information.

She said that after being booted off the plane, she was forced to deal with local ground staff who did not know anything.

It is also believed that some children on the flight were expected to return from school holidays tomorrow.

Just under 400 revellers were arrested over the two-day Big Day Out festival in Sydney, with one person found carrying 24 ecstasy tablets.

Police officers, including those from the Dog Squad and Commuter Crime unite, focused on alcohol and drug-related crime as well as anti-social behaviour at the festival in Homebush on Friday and Saturday.

Police say that a total of 381 people were arrested, with a total of 104 drug possession charges made, 12 drug supply charges, six assault charges and one malicious damage charge.

Police also handed out nine cautions over cannabis possession, ejected 11 people who were drunk and caught a further 18 who were trying to jump over the fence into the venue.

Paramedics were also kept busy, with a total of 1587 people treated by St John Ambulance volunteers over the two days, while 36 patients were taken to hospital. Many of those being treated for dehydration as temperatures exceed 40C both days.

Police also seized a range of drugs, including cannabis, ecstasy, ice, LSD, cocaine and amphetamines.

In a statement, police said that one person was found entering the venue allegedly in possession of 24 ecstasy tablets.

One police officer said that most festival-goers enjoyed themselves responsibly, but some still hadn’t got the message.

Year after year, the police repeat the same warnings before the event begins however every year there are still people who try to get past and fail.

He concluded by saying that the results also show that anti-social behaviour wouldn’t be tolerated and those charged over the two days would have to face the consequences in court.

Federal Opposition leader Tony Abbot has been voted the ‘unAustralian of the year’, for tarnishing the image of our national swimwear.

Just a week prior to Mr Abbot taking out a leadership vote against Malcolm Turnbull, he was pictured wearing a Surf Life Saving red-and-yellow cap and a pair of tight togs for a swim in the ocean.

His decision to wear Speedos prompted widespread ridicule, with even Prime Minister Kevin Rudd having his say.

Rudd joked that if a referendum was held tomorrow between budgie smugglers and boardies, he’d be voting for the boardies.

He went on to say that there were certain things that Australian’s should be protected from and one of those is national political leaders so attired.

He was also described in the ‘unAustralian of the year’ awards as a bible-bashing leader who stabbed his mates in the back to nab the leadership.

Mr Rudd didn’t escape criticism either, taking out 19tyh position for making the world believe that Australian’s use phrases such as ‘fair shake of the sauce bottle’, ‘having a dad and dave’, and ‘don’t come the raw prawn’.

Others to make the list included soon-to-be-saint Mary MacKillop, Shane Warne, The Wiggles, Vegemite and Bunnings.

Sporting a yellow ribbon in support of Black Saturday bushfire victims and a pair of tongs, the second in line for the throne served sausages for well-wishers then played a game of cricket with the stars of the sport.

Prince William visited a temporary village yesterday set up in Flowerdale, north of Melbourne, for families who lost their homes in the bushires.

A turnout of about 400 attended the barbecue lunch at Flowerdale Community Village, with the prince helping to cook 60kg of meet ordered for the occasion.

Following the game of cricket, alongside some of the biggest names in Australian cricket including Brett Lee, David Hussey, Callum and Brad Hodge, he planted a tree in memory of those who died in the bushfire and was presented with a book of photos commemorating the bushfires called Firestorm.

Earlier in the day, Prince William met with survivors from Black Saturday, including Diane and Richard Fox, who described his visit as an honour, and her husband said they had been pleased by people’s continued interest in the bushfires almost a year on.

She said it wasn’t every day that royalty comes to walk on your lovely block of land.

The prince also visited a community centre in Whittlesea, where he went for a walk to greet hundreds of locals eager to shake his hand and even try to steal a kiss.

Premier of Victoria John Brumby briefed the prince on the catastrophic bushfires of last year.

Sam Newman has already experienced the thrills of being a champion footballer, top-rating TV personality, racing car driver and a singer, but now can add defence lawyer to his resume.

Challenging the old phrase that a man who represents himself in court has a fool for a client, the outspoken celebrity acted for himself in court over a speeding fine.

The ex Geelong great, who is apparently on a three-year $3 million contract with the Nine Network, says he is challenging the $227 penalty on principle.

Outside of the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court he said he was contesting the case as the points had been taken from his license before he had the chance to defend the fine.

The case was adjourned for a contested hearing after asking Newman if he knew what was happening.

Newman, 65, was fined for driving at 72kmh in a 60kmh zone in a car with the number plates as 07PURR.

The alleged offence is said to have occurred on the Monash Freeway just prior to entering the Domain tunnel at Richmond, shortly after midnight on the 5th of September 2008.

He alleges that he did not get the penalty notice in time to challenge the fine and only discovered he had lost the demerit points when he was notified by VicRoads.

The case will return to court on February 23.
